Hindsight is a wonderful thing and there are things I wish I had known about before starting potty training with my kids. It turns out, I’m not the only parent who wishes this too! From when to start to what happens when you are heading out of the house, there are plenty of tips I could have benefited from! But bringing back my focus to today, I decided to look at the funny side of things. So here are five of the funniest things I wish I knew before starting potty training.
5 Funny Things You Need to Know Before Starting Potty Training
Toileting messes are not fun, let me tell you. At the time you are literally hands deep in poo and wee, cleaning up the floor, training pants , blankets, seats and little bottoms. But now with the benefit of hindsight, I can look back and find humour in those days. I hope you can too! Here are my funniest top five tips:
You May Get Hurt
When a kid’s gotta go, they’ve gotta go now! This means you’ll be picking them up and running to the toilet as fast as you can. Beware of hazards such as walls, steps, doors and toys on the floor. They are all things you can trip over or hurt yourself on while on your mad dash to the potty.
Only Visit Places Which Have Toilets
You can depend on the fact that a toilet visit will be necessary when going out. This means you’ll need to find out before you go if there is one and where it is. Then create a map with military precision, recording where they are and the distance to them. This helps you in your mad dash to not only avoid hazards, but to also avoid floor and undie messes too.
You’ll Have Lots of Parties
Each time your child does a wee or a poo in the potty, you’ll have a party! Cake, balloons, ice cream – the rewards are infinite! If you don’t believe me, just wait until you’ve coaxing them of every minute of every day for a week to use the potty.
Small Changes Mean Big Problems
They’ve gone to the potty while wearing their blue socks! Awesome. The problem is, when they’re wearing their red socks, they can’t go to the potty anymore. Also using the potty fully clothed is completely different to wearing clothes, just like the differences between day and night. Expect changes to make potty training skills disappear like magic.
Toilets Eat Toddlers
It’s a fact of life that the bottoms of toddlers are smaller than those of adults. This means when a toddler sits on an adult toilet seat, it will eat them. Or rather, it will eat their bottom. If you can, use a smaller toilet seat!
